Invisalign aligners don’t do all the hard work of straightening teeth by themselves. They get some help from little dots affixed to the teeth known as attachments. Not every Invisalign patient needs attachments, but many do. Here is what to expect from the attachments on your Invisalign aligners.
1. Attachments are semi-permanent.
Attachments are very small, tooth-colored dots made of dental bonding or composite resin (like tooth-colored fillings) that are strategically placed on the teeth to give the aligners a better grip. The attachments are like little anchors that help the aligners apply the necessary force to move tooth and root.
2. Attachments come in different shapes and sizes.
Invisalign attachments come in different shapes and sizes and vary for each patient. They could be square, circular, rectangular, triangular, or ellipsoidal in shape.
3. You can sometimes see the attachments.
The attachment bumps add to the visibility of Invisalign. Though the attachments are tooth-colored, when you remove aligners for meals, the attachments may be noticeable on your teeth. The aligners are also carefully created so they fit around the attachments and will have bumps in certain areas to accommodate the temporary additions to your teeth.
4. Attachments are common.
Only orthodontic patients with the most minor malocclusions avoid attachments. Most Invisalign patients will receive some attachments to help their teeth shift.
5. Putting aligners in can be tricky.
Invisalign aligners are slim and fit snugly against the teeth. With attachments in place, Invisalign fits even more tightly, and it’s necessary to get the aligner in just right so it fits properly around the attachment. There will be an adjustment period when it comes to removing and reinserting the aligners so they are worn properly.
6. Brushing must be meticulous.
It’s always important to do a good job of brushing and flossing your teeth and cleaning Invisalign aligners. Attachments add a bit of work to the job as they are a new place where food particles and bacteria can accumulate. It will be necessary to carefully clean around the attachments.
7. Attachments are not harmful.
The thought of having something bonded directly to your tooth enamel may be a turnoff where Invisalign is concerned, but attachments are not dangerous to your teeth. They are not damaging and are easily buffed off your teeth after treatment is complete.
Is Invisalign Right for You?
Invisalign is an in-depth journey and alternative to traditional orthodontics. Many patients think it’s the “easy” route to an aligned smile and, in many ways, it is. However, Invisalign is a responsibility and a commitment just like any type of orthodontic treatment. It’s important to know what to expect from your alignment method before you go all in.
